2026 Hyundai IONIQ 9 Convinces Families in Türkiye

Hyundai's electric family was long represented in Türkiye by the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6; both are technically capable, but both are five-seaters. For those looking for an electric SUV that could take a family of seven from Istanbul to Antalya on a single charge, the brand's lineup lacked an option of the right size for a long time. The Hyundai IONIQ 9, launched in November 2025, fills this gap: the brand's largest electric model sold in Türkiye, three-row and right at the heart of the E-segment. So what does this size, this battery, and this equipment actually offer to family users in Türkiye?
What is the IONIQ 9, what segment is it in, and where does it sit in Hyundai's lineup?
The IONIQ 9 is an E-segment mid-size crossover SUV - but don't take the "mid-size" designation too seriously, as its dimensions flirt with full-size limits: 5,060 mm length, 1,980 mm width, 1,790 mm height and a 3,130 mm wheelbase that would count as luxury in electric SUVs. Curb weight varies between 2,505 and 2,680 kg depending on the version. Positioned as the battery-electric equivalent of the Palisade, the model uses the E-GMP platform and is a technical sibling of the Kia EV9.
The model's development lineage is also interesting: it derives from the Seven concept shown at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show, carried the name Ioniq 7 during development, and was renamed IONIQ 9 in early 2024. The official unveiling also took place in Los Angeles on November 20, 2024. It is the third product of the Ioniq sub-brand after the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6; and at the same time Hyundai's largest electric car to date.

Range and charging: How practical are 620 km WLTP and 800V?
At the heart of the IONIQ 9 is an NCM lithium-ion battery with a nominal capacity of 110.3 kWh. The range table varies significantly by version, and buyers need to be careful here: the single-motor Long Range RWD offers a 620 km WLTP range with 19-inch wheels. In the dual-motor AWD versions, the range drops to around 600 km, and below 560 km in the Performance AWD; for the Türkiye market versions, values of 557 km for dual-motor and 510 km for the performance variant are listed. The difference comes not from the battery but from the added weight and consumption of the front motor - a buyer prioritizing range simply needs to choose the right version.
On the charging side, the 800V architecture carries the speed revolution familiar from the IONIQ 5 into the large class. The model, which can draw power of up to 350 kW in DC fast charging, completes the 10-80% range in 24 minutes; in a 15-minute stop, approximately 304 km of range can be added. On the AC side, a full charge at 11 kW takes about 10 hours - an expected figure for overnight home charging. Aerodynamics also contributes to the range target: digital side mirrors and a 0.25 Cd drag coefficient, a notable engineering result for an SUV of this size.
How is consumption in real-world use?
In a user test conducted in Türkiye, the 160 kW RWD Progressive version measured 19.6 kWh/100 km consumption over a 350 km route. That is a reasonable efficiency indicator for a three-row SUV weighing over 2.5 tonnes, and it implies the 620 km WLTP figure is approachable in the real world. Beyond roadside assistance, the vehicle can power external devices with up to 3.6 kW V2L - a practical capability for camping and home backup power scenarios.
Powertrain options: single motor or Performance AWD?
The IONIQ 9 is not sold in Türkiye with three powertrains, but with two main equipment levels: front-wheel drive (4x2) Progressive and all-wheel drive (4x4) Calligraphy. The full powertrain lineup looks like this:
| Version | Power | Torque | 0-100 km/h |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long Range RWD | 218 PS (160 kW) | - | 9.4 s |
| Long Range AWD | 313 PS (230 kW) | 605 Nm | 6.7 s |
| Performance AWD | 435 PS (320 kW) | 700 Nm | 5.2 s |
From a family SUV perspective, the Long Range AWD seems like the sensible middle ground in the range-versus-performance balance; the Performance is technically impressive, but buyers in this class are not paying for a 5.2-second 0-100. The RWD is the version offering the longest range.
Interior: is it really sufficient as a seven-seat family vehicle?

This is where the IONIQ 9's main sales argument begins. The vehicle comes in 6- or 7-seat configurations; in the 7-seat layout there is a bench in the second row, while in the 6-seat Calligraphy there are swiveling seats in the second row. Thanks to the completely flat floor, access to the third row is not a problem: the second-row seats slide forward, allowing passage to the rear without removing an installed child seat. The Relaxation Seats with recline function in the first and second rows and the touch massage function meet upper-segment expectations on the comfort front on long journeys.
The cargo volumes are also graduated appropriately for family use: 908 lt with the third row folded, 338 lt in the 7-seat layout, and 2,494 lt with the second and third rows folded. Although 338 lt looks cramped for seven-person travel, the foldable third row provides enough flexibility for most family use scenarios.
Technology equipment
On the technology side, the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 12.3-inch infotainment display on the panoramic curved screen are standard; higher trims feature a BOSE sound system with 14 speakers. Wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, 7 USB-C ports, Bluelink connectivity, a digital key, and an EV-specific route planning function - that is, navigation that factors in charging stops - are on the equipment list. Seven USB-C ports are a small but meaningful sign of a design decision that considers everyone in a three-row vehicle.
Its place among rivals and its position in the Turkish market
The most direct rival of the IONIQ 9 is the Kia EV9, which shares the same platform. The Volvo EX90 is also another major name in the premium three-row electric class. In a comparison test conducted in Germany, the IONIQ 9 finished in first place, leaving behind the rivals from BMW, Volvo and Polestar - it should be noted that this result comes from a single test, but it shows that the model's balance of comfort and efficiency is reflected in international evaluations. On the safety side, a Euro NCAP assessment is available; and in the Australian market it has received 5 stars from ANCAP.
There are also criticisms, which are important for a balanced picture: in some reviews, the quality of some plastic parts in the cabin and the steering feel were found artificial; on the driving dynamics side, the car is not a contender for someone seeking excitement. The overall assessment summary is clear: The IONIQ 9 is not sporty - it is a comfortable and quiet family SUV - and that was precisely the design goal.
The IONIQ 9 in Hyundai's electric lineup in Türkiye
In Türkiye, Hyundai's electric portfolio covers the IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, Kona Electric and IONIQ 9; sitting on top of those three, the IONIQ 9 holds the flagship position. The IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 are five-seat, compact and mid-size options; the IONIQ 9, meanwhile, is the only model offering a three-row, seven-seat option. Türkiye versions are sold as Progressive (4x2) and Calligraphy (4x4). The current brand-new price list is outside the scope of this article; however, it is enough as an indicator of the model's market position to note that its pricing is positioned in the upper-mid and premium electric SUV band, and that in second-hand listings the Progressive 160 kW 4x2 version is listed with starting values above 5 million.
Conclusion: Is the IONIQ 9 the right electric SUV for families?
For a family in Türkiye looking for a seven-seat electric SUV with 800V fast charging and 620 km of range, the IONIQ 9 is currently one of the most balanced packages among the options. 110.3 kWh battery, 24-minute 10-80% fast charging, a completely flat floor, and passage to the third row without removing anything - these four features directly answer the real problems of large family users. Sitting at the same table as the Kia EV9 and Volvo EX90 in comparisons is proof that the segment has started to offer a real option in Türkiye. Don't expect driving excitement; what you can expect is good efficiency for its size, a comprehensive technology package, and the assurance of Hyundai's 5-year warranty. If you are looking for a three-row electric family vehicle, it is worth putting at the top of your test-drive list.
