Electric Vehicle User Experience: What Awaits You in Your First Year of Owning an EV?

The first year with an electric vehicle offers a very different experience from the brochure's range and charging times: up to 20% range loss in winter, maintenance habits left over from gasoline cars becoming irrelevant, an evolving charging rhythm, OTA updates entering your logbook, and finally the real cost table that lands in your hands at year's end. This page covers the first 12 months of a driver switching from gasoline to electric, chronologically and with measurable data.
Highlights
- Modern EVs lose an average of 15-20% of their range in the cold; the loss is temporary and causes no permanent damage to the battery.
- Preheating while charging saves 2-3 kWh on a typical morning trip.
- The annual maintenance cost of a gasoline car averages 7,000-10,000 TL; an EV's 5-year maintenance costs are estimated to be about 47,000 TL lower than a gasoline car's.
- As of July 2026, Türkiye has 464,873 15-20% 46,665 charging points.
- A heat pump heats the cabin with up to 50% less energy than a resistive heater.
Winter Setting: The Realistic Scale of Range Loss

The first winter is a period that worries most new EV owners, and there is a legitimate basis for it: in cold weather, the chemical reactions in a lithium-ion battery slow down, the electrolyte thickens, and ion movement and internal resistance worsen. On top of that, cabin heating draws energy directly from the battery; the increased rolling resistance of winter tires and falling tire pressure are additional loss items to factor in.
The numbers are milder than the horror stories suggest. In independent winter tests, EVs lose an average of 15-20% of their range in the cold; on a per-model basis, the Tesla Model 3 Long Range measured a 24.8% loss, the BMW i5 a 25.1% loss, and the BYD Seal a 28% loss, while the Tesla Model Y Long Range was the best in its class with only an 11.8% loss. Large-scale data analysis shows that EVs retain roughly 78% of their maximum range in winter. While manufacturer sources point to a 10-25% band, in a typical daily usage profile the loss, including cabin heating, can rise to 20-35%; drivers in the coldest regions can effectively lose more than a third of their nominal range. The difference comes down to how the measurement is made: an optimized test at constant speed, or mixed use with real cabin heating and winter tires. In stop-and-go city traffic, regenerative braking offsets part of the loss, while on long roads the drop is more pronounced because heating remains continuously active.
Knowing the loss is temporary is reassuring: the range drop in cold weather causes no permanent damage to the battery, and the range returns when temperatures go back to normal.
Heating strategy: warming the cabin is expensive, the seats are cheap
The heart of winter economy in an EV is the heating tactic. Full cabin heating consumes 3,000-5,000 W while heating per seat uses only 50-100 W. This ratio means that prioritizing heated seats and steering wheel can preserve 5-10% of the range. In vehicles equipped with a heat pump, compared to a resistive heater, up to 50% heats the cabin with less energy; Tesla Model Y, Hyundai IONIQ 5 and VW ID.4 are well-known examples offering this feature.
- Preheat the vehicle while it's charging: since the energy comes from the grid, it isn't drawn from the battery; on a typical morning trip, this saves 2-3 kWh, which means roughly 6-10 miles of extra range.
- Check tire pressure regularly; pressure drops in cold weather, increasing rolling resistance.
- Make Eco mode and energy-focused route planning a habit.
- Charge the battery without letting it fully deplete, and keep the vehicle charging in a closed and sheltered area.
Maintenance Rhythm: No Oil Changes, Fewer Service Visits
While the annual routine in a gasoline car is built around oil and filter changes, an EV's service schedule simplifies radically. The standout items for an electric vehicle are battery checks, periodic maintenance, and software updates; suspension work, spark plugs, oil, and exhaust systems become completely a thing of the past. EVs require fewer service visits and shorter service times - the most surprising thing in your first year will probably be maintenance sessions that finish in half a day with no engine-related items on the list.
On the cost side, the picture also favors EVs: in Türkiye, the average annual maintenance cost for a gasoline vehicle is in the 7,000-10,000 TL range; EV costs over the same period are mostly lower. In a five-year estimated calculation, maintenance expenses of 55,000 TL are projected for a gasoline car, while an EV's 5-year maintenance cost comes out about 47,000 TL lower than the gasoline one. That said, the "EV maintenance is free" narrative also needs to be filtered: in Türkiye, being quoted 20,000 TL for maintenance done every four years by one brand became a subject of individual complaints. It should also not be forgotten that the biggest potential expense item is battery pack replacement; the warranty coverage and battery health agreement are among the documents that must be read within the first year.
How Does Your Charging Habit Evolve?
The first months are lived with the gas station reflex: panic when the battery drops below 40%, routing to the nearest fast charging station. Within a few months, this reflex gives way to a much calmer model - regular charging at home or at work, and planned DC fast charging stops on longer travel days. Moreover, the infrastructure in Türkiye is growing fast enough to ease this transition: as of July 2026, there are 464,873 electric vehicles and 46,665 charging points on the road; the number of stations has increased rapidly during the year, and charging infrastructure is present in all 81 provinces.
If you live in an apartment building
If you have a parking space, installing a charging unit is voted on by the condominium owners' board under the provisions of Article 42 (useful facilities) and Article 43 (luxury expenses) of the Condominium Law; there are exceptions for private parking. It should also be added that if the unit will be open to everyone and charged for, a public charging service license is required. Site solution providers offering shared-system installations and card-based charging apps make communication with management easier.
OTA Updates: Your Car's Software Becomes Part of Your Life
In a gasoline vehicle, software is a fixed code loaded once during the warranty period. In an EV, the vehicle is a product that changes constantly through OTA (wireless) updates: charging curves can be optimized, battery life can be extended, and faster charging can be unlocked. Waiting after seeing an update notification and wondering "should I upgrade my car" is a habit unique to the first year.
However, this picture also has a shadowy side. In May 2026, Chinese regulators launched an investigation following complaints from owners claiming that OTA updates reduced usable battery capacity and limited charging power; owners claim their 500 km range vehicles dropped below 300 km. This example shows that OTA can be not only a tool for efficiency but also a tool for non-transparent restriction. When choosing a product, the manufacturer's update history and communication transparency are a criterion as important as the technical specification list.
One Year of Real Costs: Does an EV Run Cheaper Than Gasoline?
At the end of the first year, real data replaces theoretical calculations in the cost table. International comparisons point in a consistent direction: in the UK, an EV runs on average £528 cheaper per year than a gasoline vehicle; in Ireland, in a 5-year total cost of ownership calculation, the EV comes out €7,357 lower than the gasoline vehicle. The difference in energy cost per kilometer is even clearer: in one sample calculation, EV charging cost was $0.05 per mile while it was $0.12 for the gasoline vehicle. On the other side stands the fact that the EV's purchase price is higher - as usage time lengthens, savings close this initial gap. These figures cannot be directly compared with prices in Türkiye; however, depending on the electricity/fuel price ratio, the direction shows a similar trend in Türkiye as well.
The second-hand perspective
The first year is also the year you experience depreciation: EVs can lose significant value in the first few years, and rapid technological development fuels this trend. A debate continues in which both sides have a point - one view says the first loss is costly for you because you are the first owner, while the other view argues that a second-hand EV that has weathered the first major value drop is advantageous for the buyer. For those considering a second-hand purchase, the critical checklist is clear: battery health, range capacity, vehicle history, and service records.
The Verdict at the End of the First Year: Where Does the Ownership Balance Stand?
At the end of twelve months, the picture comes together chronologically in three items: a temporary range drop requiring planning in winter, a maintenance burden noticeably lighter than a gasoline car's, and an increasingly rich charging infrastructure. Winter-ready equipment (heat pump, good battery thermal management, heated seats and steering wheel), clarity of your charging conditions (a home wall unit or a reliable nearby station), and the manufacturer's software transparency are the three variables that determine first-year comfort. If you set these three up correctly before purchase, the real cost table at the end of the year will look comfortably better than that of most gasoline users.
