Honda Recalls 4,804 Vehicles Due to Tire Repair Kit Fault

Honda is recalling 4,804 Accord and CR-V models in the US over the risk that the cap of the sealant bottle in the tire repair kit could separate and fly off under pressure. This announcement is a separate decision, independent of the brand's major campaign covering roughly 1 million vehicles in June 2026. Repairs will be completely free of charge for affected vehicle owners, and customer notifications will begin around November 16, 2026.
Highlights
- 4,804 vehicles in scope: 2023-2026 Accord Hybrid, 2023-2026 CR-V Hybrid, and 2025 CR-V FCEV
- Risk: the cap of the sealant bottle can separate and fly off due to pressure buildup
- Root cause is not technical: the supplier reshipped old parts mixed in with corrected parts
- NHTSA recall ID 26V-663; estimated defective rate is 1%
- Customer notifications begin around November 16, 2026; repairs are free of charge around; repairs are free of charge
How Does the Mechanism Producing the Fault Work?

These vehicles have no classic spare tire; instead, there is a tire repair kit consisting of a pressurized sealant bottle and a compressor. The kit's nozzle has a one-way valve. If the nozzle is used by being connected incorrectly to the tire valve, pressure builds up in the sealant bottle. When the relief valve fails to release this pressure as designed, excessive pressure occurs and the bottle's cap can separate. Honda states in its report to NHTSA that this scenario increases the risk of injury.
As someone who has been following this industry for more than three decades, I can say this: in most recall files, the problem is a fragile component or an inadequate engineering decision. Here, the picture is different. The engineering side, at least on paper, was corrected with the first campaign. The current fault lies in the human and logistics layer.
Why Is This Recall Separate from the June Campaign?
Honda had already recalled approximately 1,049,883 vehicles in June 2026 due to the same issue; that campaign's NHTSA ID was 26V-366. In that first wave, there were 53 warranty claims and 8 injury reports, with no reports of death. Parts were sent to the supplier for the defective kits to be corrected, the repaired kits were returned to Honda and installed on the affected vehicles.
This is exactly where the problem begins. According to Honda's statement to NHTSA, while the remedy parts were being prepared, the supplier failed to apply adequate change point management. The old parts, meaning those with the pre-fault design, were not subjected to disposal checks, and these parts got mixed in with the corrected parts in the supplier's warehouse. The supplier mistakenly shipped the old parts; as a result, some of the repaired vehicles ended up with repair kits in which the fault was never fixed. The supplier in question for the shipment is Tek Corporation.
Timeline: From July to October
The process roughly proceeded as follows: Honda, regarding the faulty shipment, July 3, 2026 was informed. It began inspecting parts believed to have been corrected in August, identified the affected vehicle population in September, and made the additional recall decision in October. The filing submitted to NHTSA is dated October 8, 2026. In other words, while some vehicle owners believe the same faulty part was replaced with a new one, they have actually received the old design back.
Which Models and Years Are Affected?
The scope has been calculated based on an estimated 1% failure rate among the vehicles produced. The breakdown by model is as follows:
| Model | Model Year | Number of Affected Vehicles |
|---|---|---|
| Accord Hybrid | 2023-2026 | 2,058 |
| CR-V Hybrid | 2023-2026 | 2,745 |
| CR-V FCEV (fuel cell) | 2025 | 1 |
Production dates are also on record: for the Accord Hybrid, January 6, 2023 - May 20, 2026, and for the CR-V Hybrid, September 8, 2022 - May 20, 2026. The fuel cell CR-V FCEV appears on the list as a single vehicle, produced on December 9, 2024.
What Should Vehicle Owners Do, and Is the Repair Free?
Yes, the repair is free of charge. Honda will notify all registered vehicle owners by mail. At an authorized dealer, the repair kit nozzle will be inspected and replaced if necessary. Unlike the recalled component, the remedy part does not contain a one-way valve; meaning the incorrect installation scenario that caused the fault is technically eliminated with the new part.
- Dealer notification began around October 9, 2026.
- Owner notification begins around November 16, 2026.
- Vehicle owners can check their status by entering their year, model, and trim information through NHTSA's VIN lookup tool or Honda's official recall inquiry page.
- The Honda customer line can be reached at 1-888-234-2138; it would be wise to confirm this information through the primary official channel.
No injuries have been reported in connection with this new campaign so far. Still, a practical recommendation can be made to drivers who have to change a tire on the road: it is smart to point the canister away from yourself in case of a possible ejection. Although a plastic cap being launched under pressure may seem like a minor risk, it is a precaution that should be taken for the sake of the face and eye area.
Unrelated to Honda's Other 2026 Recalls
During the same period, Honda also had other, broader recalls on the agenda: more than 880,000 vehicles due to a passenger seat weight sensor and airbag issue, as well as campaigns related to rear suspension components. These matters have no connection whatsoever to the tire repair kit recall and should not be confused with it.
In the past, recall campaigns were usually closed with a single campaign; the vehicle was collected, the part replaced, and the file archived. Today, the layered structure of supply chains and parts passing through third parties can bring the same issue back to the table a second time. This case is a concrete example of how critical quality control is not only on the production line, but also during repair and shipping stages. Honda's speed in detecting the faulty shipment and launching the additional campaign, however, should be noted as a positive aspect of the process.
Summary: A Short Campaign, A Long Lesson
This announcement covering 4,804 vehicles may be overshadowed by June's million-vehicle campaign, but it is technically instructive. At the root of the problem lies not engineering, but a lapse in the supplier's warehouse and shipping discipline. For affected vehicle owners, what needs to be done is simple: check the status with a VIN lookup, wait for the notification letter, and have the nozzle inspected free of charge at the dealership. On Honda's side, the schedule has become clear; the rest depends on registered addresses being up to date.
