BYD unveiled its three-row fully electric SUV at the Paris Motor Show Atto 8. The five-meter seven-seater is the brand's first vehicle in Europe offering flash charging technology: charging from 10% to 97% in nine minutes claim, and 652 km WLTP range puts it in direct challenge to established family SUVs like the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9. European sales will begin in the first quarter of 2027.

Highlights

  • 10%-97% charging in 9 minutes; 10%-70% in five minutes
  • 652 km WLTP range, 115 kWh Blade 2.0 battery
  • in the AWD version 764 hp, 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds
  • European sales first quarter of 2027; price not yet announced
  • In China it is sold under the name Tang L

What is the BYD Atto 8, and why was it unveiled in Paris?

Paris'te sahneye çıkan BYD Atto 8, %10'dan %97'ye şarjı 9 dakikada tamamlayarak Kia EV9'a doğrudan meydan okuyor.

The Atto 8 is BYD's new flagship seven-seater, three-row fully electric model in its European SUV lineup. The unveiling took place on October 12, 2026 as part of the Paris Motor Show, also known as the Mondial de l'Auto, where the vehicle was presented on stage by BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li. The vehicle is already sold in China's domestic market under the name Tang L; the European version has the distinction of being the first model to offer the brand's flash charging technology on the continent.

For anyone who has followed this industry for years, the picture is familiar: a few years ago, Chinese manufacturers were knocking on Europe's door with small, price-focused models; now they are entering directly the largest, most expensive and most technologically ambitious segment of the family. The Atto 8 is precisely the product of this transition. With a body exceeding five meters, it is almost identical in length and wheelbase to the Ford Explorer, and even an inch wider - meaning the target is the very heart of America's best-selling three-row family SUV.

How does the nine-minute charging claim work?

The Atto 8's real trump card is the flash charging system that comes with the second-generation 115 kWh LFP Blade Battery. According to BYD's statement, the battery charges from 10% to 97% in nine minutes, and from 10% to 70% in five minutes. These figures aim to directly answer the oldest objection to electric vehicles from users accustomed to the refueling experience.

However, it would be wrong to get excited without reading the details. This speed relies on the vehicle drawing 1,500 kW of power from a single connector and is only possible with BYD's own proprietary ultra-fast charging network. Reaching these figures with the current public charging infrastructure is not possible; the network is still in the process of being established. BYD plans to build 3,000 ultra-fast stations globally, while the company's overseas target is to reach 6,000 flash chargers by the end of 2027. In other words, the nine-minute charge today is less a commitment and more a promise that will materialize once the infrastructure is complete.

Cold weather performance was also explicitly addressed: according to BYD, at -30°C charging from 20% to 97% takes 12 minutes; another transfer cites the cost of the cold as roughly three minutes of additional time. LFP chemistries have historically been weak at low temperatures; this claim is a sign of the effort to close that known shortcoming.

Range, power and performance: two versions, two characters

The single-motor RWD (Design) version produces 462 PS of power and 365 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in about eight seconds. But the figures everyone is talking about belong to the AWD (Excellence) version: 764 hp of total power, reaching 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds with a top speed of 240 km/h. BYD officials present it as Europe's most powerful seven-seat SUV; admittedly the 4.1-second Audi SQ7 is still ahead in the speed rankings, but the power claim comes from the company's own statement.

The price of performance shows up in the range: while the RWD version offers 652 km (405 miles) on the WLTP cycle, that figure drops to 602 km (374 miles) on the AWD version. On a rough calculation, after a nine-minute charge the RWD version can theoretically cover more than 1,000 km - meaning a journey normally made by plane could be completed with just one charging stop.

Dimensions and hardware: a package at family SUV scale

Atto 8 5,040 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width and 1,760 mm in height; wheelbase is 2,950 mm. The European version offers seven seats in a 2+3+2 layout; it is worth noting that the domestic market version in China has five seats. Cargo volumes are close to class expectations, but this is the weak point in the table: 270 liters with the third row upright, 960 liters with the third row folded, and 1,960 liters with the second row folded as well. Additionally, there is a 136-liter frunk that opens with a double tap and a power tailgate that opens by projection.

On the cabin side, BYD brings the hardware abundance familiar in the Chinese market to Europe:

  • 15.6-inch central touchscreen, 10.25-inch instrument display and 26-inch W-HUD
  • 2.4 m2 panoramic glass roof
  • DiSound sound system with 21 speakers
  • Heated, ventilated and massaging seats
  • Refrigerator and heater function in the front console
  • Dual 50W wireless charging, Google Built-in and OTA update support

Hardware lists at this level used to be seen only in German flagships; now the same list stands before us in a Chinese model whose price has not even been announced yet, months before launch. It would be hard to find a more concrete example to show how fast the industry is changing.

Comparison with the Kia EV9: where do the rivals stand?

The names cited as targets for the Atto 8 are the Kia EV9, Hyundai Ioniq 9 and Skoda's three-row model. The clearest point of comparison is the Kia EV9: the Korean model supports 350 kW DC fast charging with its 800V architecture, its 10-to-80% charging time is around 24 minutes, and its maximum DC charging power is around 230 kW. The Atto 8's 9-minute 10%-97% charge looks like a league of its own next to these figures - yet it must be repeated: that figure depends on BYD's own 1,500 kW network, which is still under construction.

In terms of range and power, the Atto 8 also looks ahead on paper: 652 km WLTP versus the 652 km left in the shadow of the EV9, plus a 764 hp AWD version that outdoes what the EV9 offers. The practical difference is in the trunk: with the third row upright, the Atto 8 offers 270 liters while the EV9 has 333 liters and the Skoda model 299 liters. In the family SUV segment, trunk volume may not be the brightest line in the brochure, but it is one of the most tangible figures in daily use; BYD appears to have made a compromise here.

BYD's job is not easy in a market where the EV9's title as the best electric car of a chosen year for 2026 is also remembered. However, it must be admitted that there is no rival offering such a clear advantage on paper in the trio of charging speed, range, and power.

Price and European launch: two critical figures not yet revealed

The European price has not yet been announced; sales are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027. As a reference point, BYD's current seven-seater model, the Tang EV, sold in Germany with a list price of 75,000 euros, has now been brought down to 47,990 euros on its official website - a striking indication of how flexible the company's pricing policy can be. We do not repeat here the rumored UK starting price claims circulating at rumor level, as there is no verified information.

The picture on the Chinese side offers an interesting contrast: the Tang L EV, the counterpart of the Atto 8, is sold in the domestic market in the band of 222,800-272,800 yuan (approximately 33,290-40,765 dollars); however, in the January-August 2026 period, only 4,426 deliveries were made in China, an annual drop of 87.5%. In other words, BYD is repositioning a model that failed to gain traction in its domestic market in Europe's most competitive segment. This provides a reasonable inference that pricing will be aggressive - only time will reveal the official figure that European suppliers will wait weeks for.

Where words end: is nine minutes really possible at every station?

No - and this needs to be clarified from the start. The nine-minute 10%-97% charge is valid only on BYD's proprietary 1,500 kW compatible charging network; this network is still being built and reaching that speed at existing public stations is not possible. BYD's construct is to build the infrastructure with its own hands and stand behind the promise; it can also be read as a move to set a psychological threshold against the refueling times of the classic internal combustion era. Striking on paper, but in practice the faster the network grows, the more real the claim becomes.

Still, the Atto 8's debut in Paris summarizes the scale of Chinese brands' European offensive well: a five-meter family SUV coming with 652 km of range, 764 hp, and a nine-minute charging promise. When the infrastructure promise becomes reality and the price is clarified, we will see just how much established names like the EV9 and Ioniq 9 are truly challenged. Until that day, the Atto 8 awaits the first quarter of 2027 as a model that speaks through its promise and its figures.
