Tesla has finally officially unveiled the second-generation Roadster first shown back in November 2017. At the event held at SpaceX's facility in Texas, the vehicle climbed a backwards ramp using cold gas thrusters, performed mid-air rotation maneuvers, and claimed to complete its 0-60 mph acceleration in 0.81 seconds. Production, meanwhile, is earmarked for 2028.

Highlights

  • 0-60 mph acceleration claim: 0.81 seconds (according to Musk)
  • Unveiling: October 15, 2026, SpaceX McGregor facility, Texas
  • Three configurations: Performance, Thrust and Rocket (invitation only)
  • Promised range over 300 miles, top speed above 230 mph
  • Production target: 2028

How Did the Nine-Year Wait End?

The story of the second-generation Roadster witnessed one of the longest sequences of delays in the automotive world over the past decade. The prototype made a surprise appearance on stage at the end of the Tesla Semi event on November 16, 2017; that day, 2020 was targeted for production with a starting price of $200,000. Since then, the production target has been pushed back repeatedly: first to 2021-22, then 2023, followed by 2024 and 2025. In November 2025, Musk had pointed to 2027 for production and April 1, 2026 for the unveiling; the unveiling date then slipped from April to August, and from there to October 1.

The final stop did not go as planned either. The event had been scheduled for October 1, 2026 in Waco, Texas, with the "Go for launch" teaser shared on September 12; due to rain, the unveiling October 15, 2026 was moved to and SpaceX's rocket test facility in McGregor. The choice of venue was no coincidence: the star of the show was propulsion systems developed in collaboration with SpaceX.

The 0.81-Second Show: What Is Fact, What Is Claim?

Tesla'nın soğuk gaz iticilerle donattığı ikinci nesil Roadster, 0,81 saniyede 0-100 hedefini sahneye taşıyıp yerden bir anlığına kalkmayı da başardı.

The centerpiece demonstration of the event overshadowed every number on paper. The vehicle climbed over a backwards ramp using a combination of cold gas thrusters and high-power fan and suction systems, performed rotational maneuvers, and briefly lifted off the ground, hovering in the air above other Tesla vehicles. Somersault and barrel-roll-like movements showed that the thrusters could be used not only for acceleration but also to control the vehicle's trajectory.

The figure that sparked the real debate was the 0-60 mph (approximately 100 km/h) acceleration in 0.81 seconds. This is a value announced by Musk; it relates to the rocket thruster option. However, it was not specified whether the measurement includes the initial rollout. Tesla presents sub-one-second acceleration for the top trim levels only as a claim. Veteran followers of this saga will remember that the 1.9-second promise of 2017 started from a similar place.

Fitting the 200 kWh battery into the Roadster's small body is physically impossible at the moment.
Salim Morsy, analyst

This quote dates back to the 2017 era; however, the Roadster's physics debate has never closed. Venkat Viswanathan of Carnegie Mellon said at the time that the 1.9-second claim was "reasonable" given an estimated battery weight of 833 kilograms, but that it depended on the assumption of adequate tire traction. Whether the 0.81-second claim of 2026 will be achieved with electric drivetrains without thrust assist or with rocket support is one of the questions that will not become clear until the production vehicle.

Three Configurations: Performance, Thrust and Rocket

Tesla announced the new Roadster in three separate configurations. The difference between them is defined by the scope of their thrust systems:

ConfigurationDescriptionStandout Feature
PerformanceReady for road use, two-seaterActive aerodynamics and multi-mode intake system
ThrustCold gas thrusters mounted at the rearRocket
Single-seater, invitation onlyApproximately 10 thrusters placed around it, vertical and rotational movementIt was clearly stated that the Rocket version is not approved for public road use. For all versions, Tesla

promises more than 300 miles of range and a top speed above 230 mph; the upper trims carry a sub-1-second acceleration claim. Although the 230 mph threshold falls short of the "above 250 mph" target stated in 2017, it is still among the highest in official claims for a production road car.

Why Did Such a Different Design Emerge from the 2017 Concept?

The 2026 vehicle represents a clear departure from the 2017 concept. The old prototype had a smooth and rounded body with conventional headlight clusters. The new Roadster had already revealed itself in teasers before the unveiling with its sharp lines and full-width light bars at both ends. The design language evokes Tesla's angular styling; this was also reflected in the news with a note of appreciation in the industry.

There was also preparation on the brand identity side: in May 2026, Tesla had filed a new trademark application showing a sharper emblem for the Roadster. The SpaceX connection does not stay beneath the body either; the thrust system is positioned as an integral part of the product identity. Years ago, the "SpaceX package" concept was described by Musk in June 2018: COPV air tanks, also used in Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy, replace the rear seats, and about 10 small cold gas thrusters operating at roughly 10,000 psi work to improve acceleration, braking, cornering ability and top speed. The 2026 showcase is that idea turned from words into product.

Tesla's Last Manually Driven Vehicle?

One of the most interesting statements of the presentation is not about performance: Tesla, for the production version of the company's last human-driven vehicle describes it. Musk had said in April 2026 that in the long term the new Roadster would be the only manual-driving model in Tesla's lineup. Within an automaker's autonomy vision, moving driving pleasure into a separate category - effectively a collector's item - is not surprising for those who have been following this business for years; but compared to the excitement of the 2017 unveiling, it carries a very different meaning.

This statement also clarifies the Roadster's positioning: The vehicle is now presented as Tesla's technical showcase, not as a volume sales product. A brief levitation and hover demonstration was performed at the event; however, there is a distance between the "flying car" claim and what was actually demonstrated. Tesla's patent, received in August 2025, points to a technology called "ground effect" that takes advantage of ground effect - a different engineering approach from Musk's once-stated "it can fly" claim.

Price and Production: What to Expect in 2028?

Why has the price still not been announced?

In 2017, the list had a starting price of $200,000 and $250,000 for the Founders Series. This figure was later removed from the website, leaving only reservations for a $50,000 deposit. At the new unveiling, the price was not announced; reservations were reopened with a new deposit structure. It is reported that deposits for higher trims can reach up to $250,000. Given nine years of inflation, battery costs, and the engineering cost of the propulsion system, it is clear that the 2017 price has lost its meaning; Tesla's postponement of giving a figure can also be read as a consequence of this uncertainty.

Will the production schedule actually hold?

According to Musk, production starts in 2028 . This is a target date that comes after ten different target dates in the Roadster's history; the track record calls for caution. On the other hand, the cards on the table are these: the demonstration was carried out, the propulsion system physically proved that it works, three configurations became clear. In 2017 there was only a promise on paper. The Model S Plaid, introduced in 2021, broke many production car records with performance figures close to the Roadster's promises of that era; for the new Roadster to make its difference, the contribution from the propulsion system will need to be carried over to the production vehicle.

Conclusion: The Distance Between Promise and Product

In the past, an unveiling was the first step on the road to the production line; now, especially in this production, the stage show itself is almost a separate product. The new Roadster's demo at McGregor is the clearest example of this transformation: a nine-year wait, the integration of the propulsion system into the body, and the "last manual" narrative were all presented together. The 0.81-second figure is, for now, a claim; the 2028 production target is turning into a promise that must be kept. The real story will begin when the first customer vehicle hits the road.
