The Freelander brand, revived by the Chery Jaguar Land Rover joint venture, showcased the two-row five-seat version of the Freelander 8 for the first time at the 2026 Chery International User Summit held in Wuhu, China. The presentation took place at the FREELANDER Nightfall event on October 19; earlier the same day, the vehicle completed its first test drive in front of the international press at Tuju Campground. It was announced that agreements were signed with new business partners in Bahrain and Oman the same day, an AI-powered voice assistant was unveiled, and the launch plan set for the first quarter of 2027 in the UAE was confirmed.
Highlights
- The five-seat version of the Freelander 8 made its debut in Wuhu.

- Continental Europe and the United Kingdom form the final phase of the roadmap.
When and How Did the Presentation in Wuhu Take Place?

The event was structured as a two-part program. During the day, the vehicle's first international test drive was held at a campsite set up in rural southern China; in the evening, the show titled FREELANDER Nightfall hosted the world premiere of the five-seat configuration. A meaningful detail for the brand: Although Freelander is a project that can barely be called three years old, in the time since Concept 97 was presented in Shanghai on March 31, 2026, its production version has reached the roads, the global brand launch was completed in Abu Dhabi at the end of September, and now configurations tailored to different markets have begun to be showcased one by one. This pace has long been unusual in the automotive world.
At the evening event, it was not only about the vehicle. The announcement of an AI-powered voice assistant is a sign of the direction the vehicle's cabin technology is evolving toward. In addition, signatures were signed with new distribution partners in Bahrain and Oman; this is concrete proof that the brand is rapidly thickening its Middle East network.
Whose Vehicle Is the Freelander 8: Land Rover or Chery?
The name is familiar, but the structure behind it is new. Freelander is an independent brand under the umbrella of the CJLR joint venture between JLR and Chery. The brand holds the name rights, and design management is also led by JLR; technology and production come from Chery's Changshu facility. So it is not a vehicle to be sold at Land Rover dealerships, and the brand says so openly. It is not hard to guess what a former Freelander owner would look for in this vehicle; but this model is in no way a continuation of the 1997 compact off-roader.
The technical basis is Chery's E0X platform, codenamed E0V. Heading the design team is Phil Simmons, who came from the team that drew the original Freelander in 1997. Production began in July 2026; the first vehicle rolled off the line on July 30. On the dimensions side, the numbers are big: 5,118 mm length, 2,050 mm width, 3,040 mm wheelbase and 2,980 kg dry weight. The scale comparison is striking - 83 mm longer and 54 mm wider than the Defender 110, but 44 mm lower.
Powertrain: How Does the Export PHEV Differ from the China Version?
The most easily confused aspect of the Freelander 8 is that it goes to two different markets with two different powertrains. In the version sold in China, the 1.5-litre turbo Miller-cycle gasoline engine works as a generator; the wheels are driven by front and rear electric motors, and total output reaches 818 hp. The 60.331 kWh CATL NMC battery offers 221 km of WLTP electric range, and thanks to the 800V architecture, 20-80% charging is completed in 12 minutes.
The Middle East-oriented left-hand-drive export version takes a different path: a plug-in hybrid setup based on a 2.0-litre turbo gasoline engine with dual-motor all-wheel drive. System power is 460 kW (approximately 625 hp), torque is 662 Nm, and 0-100 km/h takes 5.8 seconds. The 34.12 kWh LFP battery provides 110 km of WLTC electric range and 886 km of total range. The different horsepower figures found in different sources therefore do not contradict each other; the brand has officially stated that technical specifications may vary by market.
| Specification | China Version (EREV) | Export Version (PHEV) |
|---|---|---|
| Internal combustion engine | 1.5 turbo (generator) | 2.0 turbo |
| System power | 818 hp | 460 kW (approximately 625 hp) |
| Torque | 813 Nm | 662 Nm |
| 0-100 km/h | 4.6 s | 5.8 s |
| Electric range | 221 km (WLTP) | 110 km (WLTC) |
| Battery | 60.331 kWh CATL NMC | 34.12 kWh LFP |
| Charging | 800V, 12 min for 20-80% | 11 kW AC, DC 20-80% in under 20 min |
How Does the Five-Seat Version Differ from the Six-Seat Configuration?
The Freelander 8 can choose two paths: a two-row five-seater and a three-row six-seater. The five-seat version, first shown in Wuhu, is the model's side that appeals to a more mainstream use case. In this configuration, nappa leather sourced from carbon-neutral New Zealand farms is standard; the options list includes second-row seats offering 260 mm of slide travel and 10-point massage. In the six-seater, the individual second-row seats (heating, ventilation, 16-point massage, and a 145-degree recline angle on the passenger side) and the third row with 834 mm of legroom plus heating and ventilation are aimed at family-oriented use.
The figures quoted on the cabin side are big: a 46.3-inch Mini LED panoramic display with 8K resolution, a 15.6-inch touchscreen, and a system powered by Qualcomm's automotive chips. L2+ driver assistance is standard; the list also includes a Harman Kardon sound system with 23 speakers, an optional 17.3-inch ceiling screen, and a 10-litre cabin refrigerator that can cool down to -6 °C. It is also stated that the China version features the Huawei Qiankun driver assistance system and LiDAR. The equipment list of the class we used to call the luxury segment looked like this: leather, a sliding roof, maybe a branded sound system. Watching the screen and processor war that has come all this way is a lesson in itself for someone who has been in this business a long time.
Off-road capability has not been neglected either. Dual-valve air suspension, a nine-mode terrain system, a virtual center differential lock, an electronic rear limited-slip differential, and hill descent control; the 266 mm ground clearance and 900 mm wading depth are supported by a radar-based water depth indicator.
How Much Does the Design Owe the Original Freelander?
The brand is deliberately building a visual connection with the past. Three elements stand out in the design narrative: the body's fortress-like mass, the shoulder line resembling a boat's waterline, and the triangular glass bearing the F-L letters. The slope in the D-pillars is taken directly from the three-door version of the 1997 model; the basis of the triangular glass logo also extends back there. In fact, in 1997 these lines were a practical solution; today they are an identity language with marketing value. From a designer's perspective, both are legitimate endeavors.
The International Road Map: Why the Middle East First?
The brand's launch strategy shifted from a China-first to a Middle East-first approach on January 21, 2026; this forms the backbone of the global expansion plan. The plan consists of three phases:
- Phase 1 - Middle East and left-hand-drive markets: UAE deliveries begin in the first quarter of 2027; the same quarter is targeted for Kuwait as well. In the fourth quarter of 2026, there is a plan to develop dealer networks in the other markets of the Middle East and North Africa. Following the Abu Dhabi launch at the end of September, Qatar events have also been completed; the addition of Bahrain and Oman partnerships in Wuhu shows the pace of the first phase.
- Phase 2 - Right-hand drive: Priority is Australia and New Zealand; the local launch is planned for 2027, with no quarter information shared.
- Phase 3 - Europe: First Continental Europe, followed by the United Kingdom and Ireland. Freelander has not yet announced a launch year for the UK, nor has it named the distributor company in the region.
This ordering is no coincidence. The Middle East, with left-hand drive, a hybrid focus, and a dry climate, is a low-risk arena for a first export experience of a new brand. Right-hand drive and Europe's regulatory environment make the job significantly harder. That it will launch last in the name's homeland is, of course, ironic; but commercially a predictable choice.
The Chinese Market and Next Steps
Freelander is the first of the brand's six models to come out over the next five years. The sales momentum in its home country is also remarkable: pre-sales opened on August 14 in the 339,900-449,900 yuan band collected more than 10,000 pre-orders in 48 hours; at the September 3 launch, the starting price was lowered to 289,900 yuan and more than 5,000 firm orders were received in 12 hours. Three five-seat configurations are sold in the range of 309,900-389,900 yuan (46,300-58,200 USD); the six-seat Pro is 349,900 yuan, and the Max is 379,900 yuan. It was announced that deliveries will begin on October 31.
This picture also explains what the launch in Wuhu means: the brand has now proven itself in China, and the next experiment is carrying that proof to export markets. The five-seat configuration being shown for the first time with the international version can be read as preparation for deliveries starting in the first quarter of 2027 in the UAE and Kuwait. Time will tell how it will be received there; but at least this much is clear: the Freelander name was established from the start with a plan aimed at the world.
